Strength and Weakness

Throughout my time living in various countries, I observed that it was customary for activities to cease during the post-lunch period designated for rest. The duration of this rest period varied by country. Seven months ago, I noticed that my body was signaling a need for rest in the form of a nap after lunch. Yielding to this need, I began incorporating naps into my routine, despite experiencing feelings of guilt for what seemed like an inefficient use of time.

Initially, I perceived this need for daytime rest as a sign of weakness and worried about how it might be perceived by my family and friends; I did not want them to think that I was not resilient or was abandoning my efforts. Consequently, I resolved not to let my battle with cancer and its side effects dictate the terms of my daily life.

One of the most arduous challenges associated with managing cancer is the accompanying sense of weakness. A significant weight loss of 25 pounds resulted in the diminishment of muscle mass in my arms, legs, and chest, contributing to a perceived loss of physical strength. Nevertheless, I find reassurance in the belief that our vulnerabilities can become sources of profound strength.

When we accept our weaknesses and allow a higher power to operate through us, that power becomes more apparent. Scriptural teachings encourage us to discover strength within our struggles, suggesting that our hardships serve greater purposes. One such affirming passage is found in Isaiah 40:31 (ESV): "But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."

During difficult times, prayer and reflection can be powerful tools for drawing closer to the Lord. Meditating on Bible verses that emphasize endurance and hope can bring comfort, reminding us that we are never alone in our journey.

Here are a couple verses that offer encouragement in moments of weakness:

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9 – “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

  • Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

No matter the trials we face, we can trust that God walks alongside us, offering His unwavering strength and comfort. By surrendering our fears and embracing His guidance, we find courage even in the darkest moments.
